Hi to all.

What are the differences between KNX IP Router and KNXnet/IP Router?

Thanks.

Not sure there's a difference. What do you think?

Hi Juha!
Thanks for the response.

I think that there isn't any difference between KNX IP Router and KNXnet/IP Router, but in the KNXnet/IP documentation i find this two terms.

The definitions are:

" KNX IP device describes a KNX device using the Internet Protocol (IP) as the only KNX medium."

" A KNXnet/IP Router is a special type of KNXnet/IP device that routes KNX protocol packets between KNX Subnetworks. "

" A KNX IP Router is a special type of KNX IP device that routes KNX protocol packets between its associated KNX IP Subnetwork and other KNX Subnetworks. "

Thanks

I'd chalk that up to spec text inconsistency.

BTW, are you reading the 2.0 version of the specs already?

Hi,

I remember a chat about this. If I'm correct, a KNXnet/IP Router is a device which act as a gateway. It allows to forward telegrams from one media (usually TP1) to IP and vice versa.
But, as KNXNet/IP is non routeable (regarding multicast I guess), it was planned with the IP specification to have KNXNet routers, which function is to route these unrouteable KNXNet packets. So, it's a pure IP product, which would be reserved for large installations.

Hi Mathieu.
Thanks for the response.

I still have a problem to understand the difference.
A KNXnet/IP router in located between a KNX media (TP1) and an IP network.

Where is located the KNX IP router? Can you make an example?

Thanks.

I think that KNXnet/IP is an older name for KNX/IP, but I am not sure.
This would mean though, that there is not really a difference.
