Hi guys.

I'm testing my system on the raspberry pi. I use image 2012-08-08-wheezy-armel with Java SE 6 Embedded and 1GHz overclock. On it I run three main, central servers: owfs (1-wire), lagarto (panstamp) and controller (openremote). I have a very large system with extensive graphical user interfaces (android and webconsole). When I run my system on debian laptop (powerful machine) all works fine (actually I have some problems with webconsole with graphs (web console that supports graph does not work on anther computers in my LAN, but on computer that runs all system, works fine), but this is not essential for now).

My problems have appeared when I tried to connect my system (on raspberry pi - servers runs without errors) with android app. Auto discovery finds controller, also panels are displayed, but when app start loading image cache, a few seconds loading and then I get message : "Update fail: There's no controller server available. Leave this problem?". If I have preloaded images from the previous use (when controller runs on laptop), the warning also appears. But if I then press ok (in message box), I get a user interface and it works. I tested it on android 2.0.0 beta 2 and beta 3.

I have a feeling that this sort of failure is caused by long loading large number of images.

Where could be the problem and how to solve this problem?
Thanks all for help.

Regards,
Nejc

OpenRemote-debug.apk (application/octet-stream)

I assume you only have a Android device around and no iOS?

Posted by mredeker at Nov 07, 2012 15:56

Unfortunately yes.

I will try to get the iphone and tested there as well.

Any idea for problem on android?

Nejc

Probably a timeout when loading the files. I will open an issue on JIRA.

Posted by mredeker at Nov 07, 2012 16:05

In the source code I can find that error message related to the round-robin stuff (switch server after download fails).
This is also triggered if the panel.xml could not be downloaded and there is indeed a 5s timout.

Maybe you can install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ukzzang.android.app.logviewer&hl=en
This should give you access to the log of the OpenRemote console and you can let us know if what you find there.
(I just googled that app, so no warranty if it really works )

Posted by mredeker at Nov 08, 2012 11:17

I just created a Beta4 version where I increased the timeout from 5 to 10 seconds.
Maybe you can give it a try: http://www.redeker-consulting.de/openremote/OpenRemote-debug.apk

Sorry for my late response. I was absent. Unfortunately this didn't solve my problem.
In which email address I can send you my record of logs?

Thanks in advance.

Hi gents

I have this same problem on Pi. I had thought this was a memory limitation but now I have a second Pi with 512M Ram so I too now believe this is a time out problem caused by the extra time a Pi needs to download complex panel designs.

I've tried Beta above and it did not help.

I too would love a solution because I want my Pi to be my 'always on' solution for controller.

Thanks

Please try the attached Android version.

Hi Marcus

I uninstalled previous apps, and installed this.

Sadly it seems event worse. The error this time is app fatal - "open remote has stopped working". It doesn't event get past the yellow splash screen.

Thanks anyway - any further ideas would be appreciated.

Here's one extra piece of info. On beta and the earlier version of beta 4, when you select the Pi controller URL in the settings page, I get the panel list with only the first panel listed for about 5 seconds, then the other panels appear in the list. When I select one of them it tries to load, and then stops and says panel failed to load.

Previously I had experimented and tried removing a bunch of panels and layouts and I could get a minimal set to load OK and work fine.

My problem is because you can't port commands or macros across accounts and because templates lose the commands embedded in them, it is too much work to maintain android, I pad and iPhone layouts for both PI and PC controllers all using different accounts. So my account needs to contain everything and it simply won't load onto the PI.

Thanks in advance.

But with iOS and Pi it's ok?

Posted by mredeker at Nov 21, 2012 22:18

Hmmm. Good question. I think so but before saying that too assertive ly I will check tomorrow.

Thx

Nejc, just reported that this version is working for him.
Can you try and uninstall OpenRemote and reinstall the debug version?
You can use a log tool like "CatLog" on the device to look at the log. Any information would help.
Thanks.

OK - sounds like a job for tomorrow. I will try anything. We're so close with this I am desperate to get it working perfectly on Android and Pi.
Will update on progress tomorrow.

Hi Marcus

OK. So here's what I did...

1. Uninstalled Openremote app on my Android Tablet
2. Installed Beta 4 (Debug version attached earlier in this thread)
3. Started up Openremote.

On first startup, I got the settings page and I selected my Controller Server and the required panel.

Then it went to Yellow Splash Screen and crashed.... (repeatedly) with error "OpenRemote has stopped".

I then installed CatLog, and cleared the Log Buffer, and then repeated step 3) above.

The log is as below;

Marcus: Additional Info: I can confirm that this Beta 4 version works when my Controller is my PC..... (i.e. just like Beta3).

So in summary both Beta3 and Beta 4 work when controller is my PC

Neither work when controller is Pi. But Beta 3 fail message is "Panel can not be found", add Beta 4 fail message is "OpenRemote has stopped".

I going to try one more thing.. I have a cur down version of my panel layouts (different designer file with only one screen and just a couple of graphics,, let me try that on the Pi...

Posted by mbarne36 at Nov 25, 2012 14:12

Yeah, bingo. Cut down version of panels works fine on Pi on both Beta 3 and Beta 4.

So for now I conclude that we can't use complex layouts on Pi, else OR crashes ??

Posted by mbarne36 at Nov 25, 2012 14:14

So I guess my questions are:

1. Why does this happen (timeout? RAM? CPU?)
2. Why does OP not fail gracefully
3. Can it be fixed?

Marcus: happy to share my OR Account login to give you access to my panels to be able to reproduce this error if necessary.

thanks

You can just sent me your OpenRemote.zip file which should include everything.
Which Pi version do you use (Rev2) with 512MB, overclocked, which JDK?

Hi Marcus

My Pi is the 256MB B-Model version (my 512MB is still in the post.
Yes, I have Overclocked.
I have tried both IcedTea and also Oracle - same result.

  • i've sent you my zip file

thanks

HI all -
I realize there hasn't been activity on this thread for a while but thought it was the best one for a follow-up. I'm trying to run on a Raspberry Pi.

I initially started with the Android app on Google Play and the controller running on a PC, as this seemed the easiest path to start learning OpenRemote. This configuration worked OK.

I then moved the controller to the RPI. The panels never seemed to load properly ("Using cached content") - e.g., images on screens were missing.
Tried Android Console 2.1.0.apk and Android 2.1.0 titlebar.apk, but these worked no better (actually they worked worse - never got to any screens.
Ran this on Motorola Droid3 running 2.3.4 and a rooted Nook running 4.2.1, with the same results on both.

However, using the latest app on the AppStore, worked fine with a (borrowed) iPhone.

But since I'm mostly Android equipped, I'd like to solve this on Android.

Any thoughts on how to proceed?

Thanks!

Rich Turner improved the Android console quite a bit already.
There is a forum thread somewhere where he always posts the latest APK to download.
Try the forum search to look for it.

Hi Marcus -

I found Android_Console_2_1_0_SNAPSHOT-2013-03-02.apk in the files area on Sourceforge, which appears to have been modified 2013-09-19, even though the date in the file name is much older. Is this the right file to try, or am I looking at the wrong place?

Regards,
Ron

I am not sure. Richard posted some APK's in this thread: http://www.openremote.org/display/forums/New+Android+Console+2.1.0+Beta!
Could be, that the one on sourceforge which you found, is the latest.

Marcus -

I've seen that thread and I've tried the referenced links already (those are the ones I listed in my note above).

I'll try the one on Sourceforge to see how that one does.

Thanks for your help!
